The Meditating Tree

1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.”

-Psalm 1 (NIV)

The Lord has planted us near streams of water where we are to develop strong roots and vigorously mature.  But instead we regularly grow legs and walk away from the source of life.  We are stubborn trees that don’t like to be planted.  Instead of meditating on God’s ways, we meditate on our own ways, the ways of others, or the ways of the world.  We sometimes think that the withering ways of the wicked have more to offer than life by the stream.  But deep inside we know this is not true.

We know that the true life of delight comes when we decide to constantly remain near the source of water.  Water is life giving sustenance that only comes through Jesus.  Water produces growth in love and joy and allows us to stand firm by producing strong, deep roots.  May the Lord help us to remain near Him and the source of water that he has planted us near through Jesus.  Lord, keep our wandering spirits tames and our roots growing.  Keep us near you and away from temptation.  Help us to proactively meditate on you and your Word, day and night.
