“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”
The Pharisees and other Jewish leaders prided themselves on how well they knew the Scriptures. They knew it better than anyone. They thought that salvation came through their faithfulness to the Scriptures. Jesus tells them that they’ve missed it. He tells them that Scripture is there to point to someone. Scripture is a compass that leads us to life through the Word. The words point to the Word. Salvation comes through Jesus.
In John 1:6-8, it says that John the Baptist came to witness and testify to the light that was coming to rescue men from the darkness. John came as a witness to the Word. This is what Scripture does for us today. It is a witness to the light. It is a compass that points us toward the one who brings us salvation and life. The knowledge that we gain in Scripture should lead us to greater knowledge of God’s son and the life he has to offer. I am so glad that God has given us the Scriptures for us to learn of the greatest thing that has ever happened to us. God sent salvation through Jesus Christ. We approach the book to encounter the life we have in Jesus.
