Excellence in the Year

Red Logo CMYKOur theme this year at Champions where I presently serve as Education Minister is “A More Excellent Way.”  This comes from 1 Corinthians 12: 31b which says, “…I will show you the most excellent way” (NIV).  At the beginning of chapter 12, Paul opened up a discussion on Spiritual gifts and how they are being used in the Corinthian church.  He teaches them of the importance of the gifts of the Spirit for unity and edification.  All the diverse gifts within the body are to be used for the common good of the church for their maturity in Christ.  The reason he had to speak on this topic is because there was a lot of unhealthy competition involving their gifts and overemphasis on some gifts, like speaking in tongues.  Paul emphasizes throughout chapters 12-14 that Spiritual gifts, which we all have in Christ Jesus, are to be used only in a way that is edifying to the church.

Above all Paul wants the Corinthians to know that Spiritual gifts are not worth anything if they are not undergirded by love for God and for His family.  This is the “most excellent way” that Paul is referring to at the end of chapter 12.  We have been provided a way through God’s Spirit to use our gifts in his service, but the “most excellent way” is to use those gifts with love at the forefront.  God has given us so many blessing through Jesus: salvation, life, family, worship, wisdom, and compassion to name a few.  But at the end of the great explanation of godly love in 1 Corinthians 13, Paul says that there are three “great” blessings that we have been given: Faith, Hope, and Love.  We as Christians can forever be thankful because of these three things.  Paul then says that the greatest of these is love.  Make everything in your life “excellent” this year by undergirding it with the love of God.
