Run to Your Father

Levit Keith - Statue of David by Michelangelo Florence ItalyThe most famous if not the most fascinating story of David’s life is when he faced the overgrown Philistine warrior named Goliath.  Goliath was 10 feet tall and was strong enough to wear a coat of armor that weighed 125 pounds. He even carried a spear that had a 15 pound iron point. A warrior to be afraid of for sure. David doesn’t cowar though. In Goliath, he didn’t see someone to be afraid of. He saw an enemy of God that he must face and that God can defeat. David believed that God is stronger than any enemy.

Our problem is usually not convincing ourselves that God is powerful enough to lead us to victory against our giants.  Usually it is convincing ourselves that God is greater than ourselves that is the problem. We want to believe that WE are strong enough, smart enough, charming enough, rich enough, fun enough, and capable enough. We want to be enough to overcome the enemies in life that challenge us. We are never enough without God. The truth is that David versus Goliath would mean an end to David’s life by means of that giant spear. But, David plus God versus Goliath led to victory.  David says, “You come at me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come at you in the name of the Lord God Almighty.”  Everyone is thinking David has no chance. David knows that Goliath is going down because of God.

Ultimately we need to believe. But believe in who? Yourself? Your talent? Your abilities? Your family and friends? Your church? Who will bring you peace, love, and victory in facing your giants? Who do you run to in times of fear and apparent failure?

This video, made by a couple of talented ladies at our church and starring my son, makes the point I want to make: Run to your Father who will give you strength.

What is the biggest enemy of your faith? Picture it in your mind. Is it some version of sin, a person, a situation, finances, priorities, exhaustion, or suffering? Do you believe that God is bigger than the goliaths in your life? Do you believe that God will do something about it? Do your actions and words display your trust? Do you want God to do something about this giant? There is hope and strength in God through Jesus Christ. Run to your Father.
